About WPL

Women’s Premier League (WPL) is a women’s T20 franchise cricket tournament in India started at 2023. WPL 2024 is the second season of the ladies premier league. It is owned and hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Similar to inaugural edition, this season also features five teams based in Indian cities. 

In February 2022, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced plans to start a women’s version of the Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL is a significant men’s T20 competition in India.

In October 2022, BCCI announced that the women’s version of the IPL has a five-team tournament which would take place in March 2023. However, the BCCI officially named the women’s version of the IPL as Women’s Premier League (WPL) on January 25, 2023.

The Women’s Premier League structure is based on the structure of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI invited bids for the WPL tournament’s title sponsorship rights until 2027 on January 28, 2023. Five teams acquire their players through an auction.

The WPL 2024 tournament fixtures are officially announced on January 26, 2024. The tournament will kick start on February 23, 2024 and end on March 17, 2024 in India. The WPL 2024 women’s player auction took place on December 9, 2023 in Dubai. 

According to WPL 2024’s latest news and updates, the best players are bought by the WPL team owners. On December 9, 2023, Annabel Sutherland and Kashvee Gautam was brought for INR 2.00 crore by Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants and became as the costliest player in a WPL auction.

In the WPL auction 2024 total of 30 players were sold for the amount of INR 12.75 crores. Gujarat Titans utilized the auction to perfection and brought 10 players in the auction which is the most among the teams who were in auction. They brought all those 10 players for the purse value of INR 4.5 crores. Delhi Capitals was the team who brought the least amount of players in auction as they brought only 3 players for INR 2.2 crores.
