In February 2022, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced plans to start a women’s version of the Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL is a significant men’s T20 competition in India.

In October 2022, BCCI announced that the women’s version of the IPL has a five-team tournament which would take place in March 2023. However, the BCCI officially named the women’s version of the IPL Women’s Premier League (WPL) on January 25th-2023.

The Women’s Premier League structure is based on the structure of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI invited bids for the WPL tournament’s title sponsorship rights until 2027 on January 28th-2023. Five teams acquire their players through an auction.

The first auction of WPL-2023 to purchase players for each franchise team was held in Mumbai on February 13th-2023. A total of 87 players were sold during the WPL auction. Out of 87 players, 30 players are from overseas.
